Having large breasts that are clearly disproportionately large for your frame can be a painful experience for some. The weight of oversized breasts can cause neck and back pain that prevents you from living the life you want. The discomfort with activity or inability to exercise and take part in activities you love is reason to consider a breast reduction surgery. At Austin Plastic Surgery Institute & Skin Care Clinic, you work directly with Dr. Haydon, a top plastic surgeon in the Greater Austin area, to create a custom size and contour for your new breasts. Our caring team takes the time to listen to your goals to develop a look that will leave you confident and a breast size that will allow you to live your best life. In some cases, your breast reduction may be covered in your insurance.
Benefits Of Breast Reduction
For women with large breasts, especially petite women, the physical burden of carrying the extra weight can be daunting. There are also cosmetic reasons you may consider the procedure. For women who are unhappy about the size or contour of their breasts, a reduction offers the opportunity to reshape the area.
Benefits of a breast reduction include:
Relief from ongoing back, neck, and shoulder pain
Breasts that are now proportionate to the rest of the body
Ability to lead an active lifestyle
Ability to breathe better (specifically during exercise or those with asthma)
Reduced skin irritation on underside of breasts
Creation or restoration of a symmetrical appearance
A breast reduction surgery with Dr. Haydon gives women the opportunity to choose the best-fit shape and size breast they are most comfortable with.

The exact techniques used for reducing your breast size will be determined by factors such as breast composition, breast size, overall health, desired degree of reduction, and personal preferences.
Breast reductions begin with administration of general anesthesia to ensure a pain-free procedure. Once it has taken effect, Dr. Haydon will make incisions to reposition the nipple/areolar complex and remove excess weight. The nipple remains attached to underlying breast tissue to preserve its original nerve and blood supply. The areolae is normally reduced to better suit the breasts’ new proportions.
Dr. Haydon will surgically remove excess fat, skin, and glandular breast tissue to reduce breast size. He will layer sutures deep within the breast tissue to help shape and support the new breasts. In some cases, internal mesh support is added if he feels that the elasticity of the skin and breast tissue is poor. Finally, the incisions will be closed with absorbable sutures and then covered with a protective skin glue.
Dr. Haydon uses two separate techniques to close the breast after the excess skin and breast gland is removed. The most popular is the circumvertical pattern with a lollipop (AKA short scar) closure while the other is the Wise pattern that results in an anchor closure.
Each technique has advantages and disadvantages and this will be explained during your consultation. Scarring from breast reduction surgery is normally minimal. You will be given recommendations for scar treatment gels and sometimes sheeting to optimize your short and long-term results. When the reduction is performed, Dr. Haydon will also lift the breasts, giving you a more proportionate, youthful appearance.
Healing After Breast Reductions
After breast reductions the recovery involves patience, plenty of rest, and time off from work (normally at least a week). It will be necessary to avoid physically taxing activities for a time (normally 2-3 weeks).
Wearing a comfortable and supportive surgical bra without underwire helps to support the breasts as they heal. This also aids in reduction of swelling.
You will be able to see the initial results of your breast reduction procedure immediately. Over time, the swelling will resolve, revealing your final results.
Patient Journey – Breast Reduction
“Thank you Dr. Haydon and Staff”
5 –Written onSeptember 2019
Dr. Haydon created the body I always wanted. I had a breast reduction, liposuction and a tummy tuck. He and his staff were caring, knowledgeable and thoughtful throughout my process. He explained that the “tummy tuck incision will be below your bikini line.” I told him I was approaching 60 and my bikini days are over. Let’s just say that summer I was in a bikini looking hot! Thank you Dr. Haydon and Staff!
